What Should I Wear for Maternity Photos?

(Simple tips to help you feel confident, comfortable, and beautiful)

One of the first questions almost every expecting mom asks when planning maternity photos is:

“What should I wear?”

And honestly, it’s a very valid question.

Your body is changing quickly, your comfort level may shift day by day, and finding something that feels beautiful and photographs well can feel overwhelming.

The good news is this:

You don’t need a huge wardrobe or complicated outfits for maternity photos.

With a few simple guidelines, you can choose clothing that feels comfortable and looks beautiful in your photos.

The Goal: Comfortable, Flattering, and Timeless

The most beautiful maternity photos happen when moms feel comfortable and confident in what they’re wearing.

When choosing outfits for your maternity session, aim for clothing that is:

  • soft and comfortable
  • flattering to your bump
  • timeless rather than trendy
  • easy to move and breathe in

Flowy fabrics, simple textures, and soft silhouettes tend to photograph beautifully.

The 3 Undergarments Every Mom Should Bring

This is one of the simplest tips that makes styling much easier.

For maternity photos, I always recommend bringing three underwear options:

  • White
  • Black
  • Skin tone / nude

These neutral options work well with almost every outfit, especially when wearing:

  • flowing gowns
  • sheer fabrics
  • robes
  • draping maternity fabrics

Having these three options available ensures we can style outfits without worrying about visible lines or colors showing through.

It’s a small detail that makes a big difference.

Flowy Dresses & Gowns Photograph Beautifully

Many maternity sessions feature flowing gowns or dresses, and there’s a reason for that.

Long, soft fabrics help:

  • highlight the shape of your bump
  • create movement in photos
  • add softness and elegance to the images

These styles photograph beautifully both in studio and outdoors.

Many photographers (including me) also offer a maternity client closet with gowns specifically designed for maternity photography.

This means you may not need to purchase anything at all.

Simple, Neutral Colors Work Best

Neutral tones tend to photograph beautifully and keep the focus on you and your pregnancy.

Great color options include:

  • cream
  • beige
  • soft white
  • muted earth tones
  • soft pastels

These tones help create images that feel timeless and elegant rather than overly styled.

Bright patterns and busy prints can sometimes distract from the connection and emotion in the photos.

What Should Your Partner Wear?

If your partner is joining the session, simplicity is key.

A good starting point is:

  • neutral shirts or sweaters
  • simple textures
  • clothing that coordinates (not perfectly matches) your outfit

Soft, cohesive colors create a polished look without feeling overly styled.

Comfort Always Comes First

Pregnancy is a season where comfort matters.

Choose clothing that:

  • allows you to move easily
  • doesn’t feel tight or restrictive
  • makes you feel relaxed and supported

When you feel comfortable, it naturally shows in your photos.

And that’s when the most beautiful images happen.

You Don’t Have to Figure This Out Alone

One of the biggest parts of my role as a photographer is helping guide styling decisions.

You never have to show up with the “perfect outfit.”

I help moms:

  • choose outfits that photograph beautifully
  • style pieces from the client closet
  • coordinate partner clothing
  • create a cohesive look for the entire session

You don’t have to guess.

You don’t have to stress.

You just need to show up.

The Right Outfit Is the One That Makes You Feel Beautiful

There is no single “correct” outfit for maternity photos.

Some moms love:

  • flowing gowns
  • soft robes
  • fitted dresses that highlight the bump
  • simple lifestyle outfits

The right choice is the one that makes you feel comfortable, confident, and celebrated.
